On October 7, 2024, Mumbai introduced its first-ever underground metro service, the Metro-3 Aqua Line, marking a significant step forward in the city's transportation infrastructure. This new metro line aims to improve connectivity between the bustling Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and the lush Aarey Colony. The Aqua Line, covering a 12.44 km stretch of the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ line, was officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Aqua Line is designed to provide a much-needed solution for daily commuters, especially office workers who travel across Mumbai. It operates every day from 6:30 am to 10:30 pm on weekdays, with a later start time of 8:30 am on Sundays. The fare structure is affordable, ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 50, making it an economical option for passengers across the city.
This new metro service highlights Mumbai's growing urban landscape and infrastructure, offering reliable and affordable transportation options. The Aqua Line will run a total of 96 trips every day, ensuring that passengers have frequent services available throughout the day. Each train is capable of reaching a top speed of 85 kmph, with an average speed of 35 kmph. The trains are designed to accommodate over 2,000 passengers, addressing the need for efficient public transportation in one of India's busiest cities.
The Aqua Line includes 10 strategically located stations, making it easy for travelers to access important areas across Mumbai. Some key stations include the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) Terminals 1 and 2, and the industrial hub of MIDC. Out of the 10 stations, nine are underground, showcasing the advanced engineering involved in this project. Aarey Station is the only station above ground, highlighting the unique design and construction efforts behind the Aqua Line.
To make travel convenient for passengers, tickets can be purchased either at station counters or through the Mumbai Metro-3 app. The introduction of digital bookings aims to make the commuting experience smoother. Additionally, Mumbai's public transportation system is moving towards a more integrated model with the upcoming acceptance of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) across all metro lines. This will provide passengers with a seamless travel experience across different forms of transportation within the city.
The launch of the Aqua Line is not just a milestone for Mumbai's public transport, but also a critical step in managing the city's traffic and pollution issues.
