Mumbai And Surrounding Areas On High Alert Due To Heavy Rainfall

Several districts across Maharashtra are on high alert as heavy rainfall continues to lash the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Palghar and the ghat regions of Nashik and Pune, warning of extremely heavy rain in some areas. Mumbai is also likely to receive more rain, with daytime temperatures expected to stay between 27 and 29 degrees Celsius.

According to the IMD, the intensity of the rain may reduce slightly by Friday. However, the wet spell is likely to continue on June 21 and 22. Because of the continuous rainfall, many rivers in Maharashtra have risen above their danger levels, prompting local authorities to issue safety warnings for residents in low-lying areas.

Rivers Overflow and Schools Shut

In Raigad district, the Amba and Kundalika rivers have already crossed their danger marks, and officials have also issued a warning for the Patalganga River. In Ratnagiri, the Jagbudi River is flowing above safe levels, raising concerns about possible flooding. As a safety measure, all schools and colleges in Raigad have been closed for the day.

Several small towns and villages located along the riverbanks, especially near Amba and Jagbudi, have started to experience flooding. In parts of western Maharashtra, the Indrayani River is also overflowing. In Nashik, the Godavari River is swelling due to heavy rains in its catchment areas.

In Sindhudurg district, access to Nadar village in Kudal tehsil has been blocked after the Hateri River overflowed and cut off the connecting roads.

Landslide in Ratnagiri

A landslide occurred at Kuchambe village in Sangmeshwar tehsil of Ratnagiri, leading to villagers being relocated to safer areas. Meanwhile, Mumbai recorded the highest rainfall in Maharashtra over a 24-hour period ending at 11 am, with 142.6 mm of rain.

Raigad district followed with 134.1 mm of rain, Palghar with 120.9 mm, Thane with 90.3 mm, and Mumbai suburban district with 60.5 mm of rainfall during the same period.

Safety Measures and Alerts

An orange alert has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Nashik, Ratnagiri, and parts of Satara. This alert warns residents about potential flooding and hazardous conditions until 8:30 am on June 20.

The continuous rainfall has led to flooding along several riverbanks across Maharashtra. The Godavari River's bank was flooded after heavy rains in Nashik on Thursday.

The IMD and local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as they work to ensure public safety amid these challenging weather conditions.
