To improve last-mile connectivity for Chennai Metro users, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) plans to introduce 220 new air-conditioned electric microbuses by July 2026. These buses will run every 5 minutes within a 5-km radius of Metro stations, making it easier for commuters to reach and leave the Metro conveniently.

Pre-Tender Meeting Was Held
A pre-tender meeting was recently held at the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) office with major vehicle makers like Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors, and Olectra, which was organized by MTC and Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA), and discussed the availability of 5-metre and 6-metre-long microbuses for the new routes. Some companies suggested using 7-metre electric buses too. Officials said that the rollout of the new buses will likely begin by July next year.
How Microbuses Will Benefit Commuters?
CUMTA officials explained that these air-conditioned microbuses aim to give passengers a comfortable "Metro-like" experience even during short first- and last-mile travel. The goal is to attract private vehicle users, such as two-wheeler or auto commuters, to switch to public transport by offering affordable, reliable, and comfortable feeder bus services.
Types of Electric Microbuses
MTC's proposal includes 220 electric microbuses in two types: 110 low-floor buses (400 mm ground clearance) designed for passengers with disabilities, and 110 standard-floor buses (900 mm) for regular routes. The buses will operate under a Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model, meaning MTC will manage both operation and maintenance.
How Will it Benefit Chennai Metro Commuters?
Four depots, including Koyambedu, Saidapet, Wimco Nagar, and Pallavaram, have been chosen for the services. Each bus will have air-conditioning, CCTV cameras, GPS tracking, panic buttons, automatic fare collection, passenger display systems, and a minimum seating capacity of 12. These modern features will ensure safe, convenient, and efficient travel for Chennai Metro commuters.
