Mangaluru is preparing to introduce a Water Metro by March 2026, a project set to improve public transport in the city. The Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) is currently conducting a techno-economic feasibility study to ensure that the project is both sustainable and beneficial for economic growth.

Jayaram Raipura, CEO of KMB, said that the goal is to make the project self-sustaining and beneficial for travel and tourism. The Mangaluru Water Metro Project (MWMP) will be India's second-largest water transport network, after the Kochi Water Metro.
Eco-Friendly Transport with Modern Amenities
The Water Metro will provide an eco-friendly and efficient transport option for both people and goods. The project aims to improve the tourism sector by offering modern facilities such as dry kitchens for food and beverages. The ferries will run on 100% electricity, reducing carbon emissions and making transport more sustainable.
Better Connectivity & Boost for Eco-Tourism
The Water Metro will improve connectivity along the Netravati and Gurupura rivers, helping to reduce traffic congestion in the city. It will also promote eco-tourism and benefit remote communities, linking areas from Bajal to Maravoor. This project is expected to create new economic opportunities and improve the quality of life for locals.
Project Details & Key Routes
In the first phase, the Water Metro will cover a 30 km stretch across the **Netravati and Gurupura backwaters. The key routes will run fro Bajal to Maravoor Bridge, passing through major locations. The plan includes 17 water metro stations, including stops at Bajal, Someshwara Temple, and Maravoor Bridge.
The project will also set up jetties, boats, and feeder buses, with private companies expected to handle operations.
Mangaluru's Big Leap in Urban Transport
Mangaluru's Water Metro will be the third in India, following Kochi and Ayodhya. The Kochi Water Metro was launched in April 2023 with 78 boats and 38 jetties, while Ayodhya started its water metro service in January 2024 on the Sarayu River.
With integrated road, rail, and water transport, Mangaluru's Water Metro aims to enhance urban mobility, boost tourism, and support economic growth. This project marks a major step forward in making the city's transport system modern, efficient, and sustainable.
