Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has announced a major change at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). From April 15, 2025, all flights operating from Terminal 2 (T2) will be moved to Terminal 1 (T1). This decision is part of a larger plan to improve airport facilities and prepare for the increasing number of domestic travelers. The upgrade will ensure smoother operations and a better experience for passengers.

Why is Terminal 2 Closing?
DIAL had earlier mentioned that Terminal 2 would temporarily close for four to six months for renovation. This upgrade is necessary to manage the rising number of domestic passengers and to modernize the airport. The improvements will help provide better services in the future, making travel more convenient and efficient.
Impact on Flights and Passengers
Currently, Terminal 2 handles about 270-280 flights per day, serving around 46,000 passengers. Major airlines like Akasa Air and IndiGo operate from T2. Once the transition begins, these flights will shift to Terminal 1. DIAL is working closely with the airlines to ensure a smooth transfer, minimizing any inconvenience to passengers.
A Major Step for Delhi Airport
DIAL's CEO, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, expressed excitement about this development. He said, "We are pleased to announce that Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 will be fully operational from April 15, 2025. This is a major milestone in improving passenger experience and meeting the growing demand for air travel. All flights from Terminal 2 will be moved to Terminal 1 as part of this process," as reported by The Indian Express.
The Expansion of Terminal 1
Terminal 1 has undergone a major expansion under Delhi Airport's Phase 3A development plan. This expansion was completed in March 2024 and has significantly increased the terminal's size from 55,740 square meters to 206,950 square meters.
The upgraded terminal now includes:
- Advanced baggage handling systems
- Self-service check-in kiosks
- Automated security checks
- Direct Metro connectivity
- Improved lounges and seating areas
- More shopping and dining options
These changes will make travel easier and more comfortable for passengers.
Aiming for Record Passenger Capacity
Delhi Airport is on track to become India's first airport to handle over 100 million passengers annually. The expanded Terminal 1 will have the capacity to accommodate up to 40 million passengers per year. This will complement Terminal 3's capabilities, and the space freed up by the transition from T2 will be used for further improvements.
A Big Leap for Indian Aviation
Moving all flights from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 is a major step in making Delhi Airport one of the most advanced in India. This upgrade will help manage increasing air traffic and improve passenger convenience. As the demand for air travel continues to grow, these developments will position Delhi Airport as a leader in India's aviation sector, ready for future challenges and opportunities.
