Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram: Key Highlights of the Redevelopment Project

Mahatma Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram, a place deeply intertwined with India's freedom struggle, is set for a remarkable transformation. On March 12, exactly 94 years after the iconic Dandi March, Prime Minister Modi unveiled the master plan for the Gandhi Ashram Memorial and Precinct Development Project in Ahmedabad. This redevelopment initiative, estimated at ₹1,200 crore, aims to honor Gandhi's legacy while providing modern amenities to visitors.

The unveiling of the masterplan coincides with the inauguration of the redeveloped Kochrab Ashram, Gandhi's first residence in Ahmedabad upon his return from South Africa in 1915. This significant step underscores the commitment to preserving Gandhi's memory and teachings for future generations.

Here are the key highlights of the Sabarmati Ashram redevelopment project:

1. Project Scope:
- The ambitious project seeks to revamp the infrastructure surrounding the Sabarmati Ashram, offering state-of-the-art facilities to visitors and creating a world-class memorial dedicated to the Father of the Nation.

2. Masterplan Highlights:
- The masterplan includes several exciting features such as Mohan to Mahatma Park, an arboretum showcasing trees from all states and Union Territories, a Herbal Garden shaped in Gandhi's iconic walking pose, and a Meditation Hall for contemplation.

3. Tree Planting:
- As part of the project, 3,000 additional trees will be planted, adding to the existing greenery of the Ashram. These trees will include species favored by Gandhi himself, along with other indigenous varieties.

4. Educational Experience:
- The revamped Ashram aims to offer visitors an immersive educational experience, allowing them to learn about Gandhi's life, work, philosophy, and message to the world.

5. Global Spirituality Mahotsav:
- The Union Ministry of Culture has announced a Global Spirituality Mahotsav to be held at the meditation center of the Kanha Shanti Vanam, providing an opportunity for spiritual enrichment and reflection.

Apart from the Sabarmati Ashram, several other memorials across India pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi's extraordinary life and legacy. These include Raj Ghat in Delhi, Gandhi Smriti, Sabarmati Ashram, Dandi March Memorial, and Eternal Gandhi Museums, among others.
