Due to the ongoing political chaos in Peru, all tourism-related operations at Machu Picchu have been put on indefinite hold. The well-known Inca Trail is also impacted. The choice was made to ensure the overall safety of residents and visitors.
One of the New Seven Wonders of the World is Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site from the fifteenth century. Both the Andean regions and Lima's metropolis are categorically off-limits to tourists.
What is Happening in Peru?
In the midst of ongoing anti-government protests, Peru shut down the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu on Saturday, 21st January 2023 trapping hundreds of tourists there for hours. At the same time, authorities forcibly removed protesters from Lima University where they had camped out amid the crisis gripping this divided nation.
Since the beginning of December, protests calling for the resignation of Peruvian President Dina Boluarte have taken place, resulting in 46 fatalities and forcing the government to declare a state of emergency in places where violence has broken out.

An enormous disparity exists between Peru's urban elite and the poor rural Indigenous people of the Andean region who saw leftist Indigenous president Pedro Castillo as one of their own and working to improve their lives. This crisis, which was precipitated by his ouster last month, is largely the result of this disparity.
More than 400 foreign and local tourists were recently trapped in these well-known locations. Some of them even made the decision to walk the approximate six to seven hours to the closest community, Piscacucho.
Avoiding Cusco city, which is currently one of the most impacted locations and is where the renowned Machu Picchu is located, is the only sensible course of action. Reports state that travelers who have already purchased tickets for Machu Picchu will receive a full refund.
Rail services to the site had been halted before Machu Picchu's closure because protesters had damaged the track and this renowned tourist destination can only be reached by train.
