The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is getting ready to invite bids to build an internal road that will lead to Maharashtra's longest glass skywalk in Lonavala. This exciting project, costing ₹909.04 crore, aims to connect the popular tourist spots - lion and tiger points - and bring a big change to tourism in the region. Officials believe this development will become a major attraction for visitors from Pune, Mumbai, and beyond.

Tenders and Land Acquisition
Eight tenders are currently under review. The internal road work will begin first to set the pace for this big project. PMRDA will also invite international bidders to join the project, bringing in global experience and quality. A senior PMRDA official said this road construction will mark the beginning of a major tourism project for the district.
For the construction to happen, PMRDA has already received primary approval to use 20.90 hectares of forest land. They have also transferred ₹5.25 crore to the forest department as the net present value for the land. In addition, other land parcels have been identified to replace the forest land. The process to acquire 3,378 square metres of private land is almost complete.
Better Roads and Regional Infrastructure
To make it easy for tourists to reach the skywalk, PMRDA has planned big improvements in infrastructure. One of the main changes includes widening the 11-km A1 Chikki-skywalk road to 45 metres. Another major plan is to build an elevated freeway that will connect Mulshi and Lonavla.
All these upgrades will take place near Kurwande village, which is already known for its beautiful natural views and popularity among visitors. These developments will help more people enjoy Lonavala's charm comfortably.
Design and Special Features
The glass skywalk will be 125 metres long and 6 metres wide. It is inspired by the famous Grand Canyon Skywalk in Arizona, USA. There will also be a 90-metre-long bridge to improve the experience for visitors.
Tourist facilities will include a rooftop café spread over 5,000 square metres, an amphitheatre with space for 1,000 people, adventure sports zones, and parking for 1,600 cars and 2,000 two-wheelers.
Project Timeline and Funding
The entire project is expected to be completed by June 2027. Out of the total ₹909.04 crore, ₹213.12 crore is planned for core infrastructure work. The rest, ₹695.92 crore, will be developed through public-private partnerships.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has directed PMRDA to make sure the project is completed on time. Officials say this is more than just a tourist attraction - it is a game-changer for regional development, aiming to create strong tourism hubs with better roads, good facilities, and economic benefits.
