The work to connect two metro viaduct pillars at the EM Bypass-Chingrighata crossing for Kolkata's New Garia-Airport Metro, Orange Line has been postponed. The work was originally scheduled to take place from Friday night until early Monday morning.

Kolkata Metro's Work has been delayed
Earlier, the Chingrighata flyover was expected to remain closed from 8 pm on Friday to allow Metro Railway to launch a girder between two pillars. However, Kolkata Police announced on Thursday that the work has been delayed. As a result, all planned traffic restrictions and diversions have been cancelled, and the flyover will remain open for normal vehicle movement until further notice.
Kolkata Metro to Begin Work from 10 July
Metro Railway officials said they have already received a no-objection certificate (NOC) from Kolkata Police for the project. They now expect to carry out the work between the night of July 10 and the early hours of July 13, subject to final approval from the police.
Officials said all preparations have already been completed. Workers, machinery, and equipment are ready, and a traffic trial under the proposed diversion plan has also been successfully conducted. The work will begin once Kolkata Police gives formal permission before the new scheduled dates.
The current task involves connecting pillars numbered 326 and 327. After this section is completed, Metro Railway will move towards the Broadway side from EM Bypass to connect the remaining pillars along the route.
According to Metro Railway officials, once all the pillar gaps are bridged, train services between New Garia and Sector V are expected to begin within six months. The new metro stretch is expected to reduce travel time significantly, especially during busy peak hours.
Measures Taken to Reduce Traffic Congestion
Kolkata Police officials said they have learned from the previous phase of construction, which took place from June 26 to June 29. During that period, traffic diversions caused heavy congestion, especially on June 27 due to an examination and several marriage functions.
To avoid similar problems when work resumes later this month, police plan to keep one side of the Chingrighata flyover open for traffic while Metro Railway carries out the pillar-connecting work. This is expected to reduce inconvenience for commuters.
