Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three newly constructed sections of the Kolkata Metro rail network, aiming to elevate the city's urban mobility. The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade, Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, and Taratala-Majerhat sections of the Kolkata Metro were inaugurated during PM Modi's visit to Kolkata on Wednesday (March 6). The primary objective of this initiative is to strengthen avenues for ensuring seamless urban mobility in the city.

The sections include the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade, Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, and Taratala-Majerhat stretches of the Kolkata Metro.
Know about some of the exceptional features, that form part of the East-West Metro corridor, are:
1. The groundbreaking feat of India's first transportation tunnel beneath the formidable Hooghly River, delving to a depth of 40 meters. Spanning 520 meters, the tunnel was meticulously crafted using state-of-the-art tunnel boring machines.
2. Hosting India's deepest metro station, the Howrah Metro station, nestled 30.5 meters below the earth's surface. Spanning five levels across a sprawling 54,000 square meters, it proudly stands as the nation's largest metro station.

3. The new Metro station, India's second deepest, plunges to a depth of 28 meters below ground level. Serving as a vital interchange nexus for three metro lines, its design resonates with the colonial charm of Kolkata's architecture.
4. Boasting cutting-edge facilities including an automatic fare collection system, platform screen doors, fire detection, and suppression mechanisms, CCTV surveillance, and an emergency evacuation system.

Anticipation grew as the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section promises to slash travel times between Kolkata and Howrah by a staggering 75%, offering relief from the hectic traffic snarls clogging existing bridges. It stands as a testament to India's prowess in metro rail engineering and construction, marking a significant milestone in the nation's urban transport landscape.
The inauguration of these sections marks a pivotal moment in Kolkata's transit narrative, promising a more seamless and efficient commute for its denizens. As the city continues to evolve, such infrastructural leaps underscore the government's commitment to fostering sustainable urban development.
Residents and commuters alike eagerly await the dawn of a new era in Kolkata's metro network, poised to embrace the convenience and connectivity these new sections herald. With PM Modi's imminent visit, the air is rife with optimism and anticipation, echoing the collective aspirations for a brighter, more accessible future for Kolkata's urban landscape.
