In a beautiful location right in the heart of Kochi, Queen's Way is all set to become a new centre for adventure water sports. Known for its scenic backwater views and the country's first automated walkway, this popular walkway is now getting ready to welcome thrill-seekers from across India and abroad. This exciting development is led by the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA), aiming to attract more tourists and make Queen's Way a top destination.

Queen's Way in Kochi is a scenic waterfront promenade along the Kochi backwaters, offering breathtaking views and a relaxing atmosphere. It is known for its automated walkway, the first of its kind in India, and is a popular hangout spot for locals and tourists alike.
Adventure water sports coming soon
The job of starting these new water activities has been given to Kiyan Logistics, the company known for running the district's first floating bridge at Kuzhupilly beach. After winning the contract through a competitive bidding process against five other companies, Kiyan Logistics now has a five-year deal to set up and manage the adventure sports.
These new activities are meant to offer something different from regular sightseeing. In the first phase, ten water sports will be introduced. These include kayaking, jet skiing, and stand-up paddleboarding. More activities will be added in the future. The sports will take place near the GIDA boat jetty, where tourists will have access to basic facilities like a ticket counter and dressing rooms. Safety of the participants will be a top priority.
Infrastructure upgrades at Queen's Way
To make the area even more attractive, GIDA is also improving the infrastructure. Cochin Smart Mission Ltd (CSML) is building a cycle track-cum-walkway on the opposite side of Queen's Way. The track is almost ready and will include modern streetlights to make it safer and more inviting for visitors. GIDA Secretary Raghuram shared that the focus is on turning Queen's Way into a vibrant tourist hub with both adventure activities and better infrastructure.
Concerns from local fishing communities
While the new plans are exciting, there are also challenges. Some members of the local fishing community are worried about how these activities could affect the lake's biodiversity and their daily fishing routines. They have also expressed concern about the depth of the lake in different seasons, especially during low tide. However, GIDA officials said a detailed study has been done, and the environmental risk is minimal.
Why Queen's Way is already special
Queen's Way stretches for 1.8 km, starting from GIDA Road to Chathiath Church. It's already a favourite spot for both locals and tourists. The walkway is beautifully designed with green landscaping, roadside eateries, and over 120 benches along its tiled path. With the addition of water sports, the place will offer both peace and excitement for all kinds of visitors.
