Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) Managing Director Lokanath Behera has stated that the metro agency will carry out a detailed study to start water metro services connecting Mattancherry with Fort Kochi. He shared this information while speaking to members of the business community in Mattancherry. The meeting was organised by

the Mattancherry branch of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ICCI). During the interaction, Behera assured traders and merchants that KMRL would take active steps to improve transport connectivity to Mattancherry.
Disrupted Water Metro Services
At the meeting, merchants raised concerns about the frequent disruption of water metro services and boats operated by the State Water Transport Department during low tide. They pointed out that ferry services are often affected when water levels fall, causing inconvenience to commuters and businesses. To address this issue, the traders requested proper dredging of water routes so that boat services can run smoothly at all times.
Kochi Metro's Effective Measures
Responding to their concerns, Behera promised that KMRL would take necessary steps to ensure effective and timely dredging of the waterways. ICCI leaders later confirmed that the managing director had assured them of action to reduce interruptions in ferry operations caused by low tide.
Business Communities' Urge
The business community also urged KMRL to expedite work on extending water metro services to nearby areas, such as Thoppumpady and Palluruthy. They highlighted that better water transport links to these areas would benefit residents, traders, and daily commuters. In addition, a proposal to extend the metro rail network to Palluruthy was presented during the meeting.
Kochi Metro MD's Opinion
Behera responded positively to these demands, stating that KMRL would explore all possible options to meet the expectations of the local business community. He assured the merchants that the metro authority is committed to improving public transport facilities and strengthening connectivity in and around Mattancherry through both water metro and metro rail services.
