The second phase of the Kochi Metro project has been delayed and is now expected to become operational by April 2027 rather than the earlier planned timeline. The delay occurred due to funding-related issues that slowed down construction work progress.

Kochi Metro Phase II Pink Line
Earlier, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) had planned to open the first section of the Phase II Pink Line, from JLN Stadium to Padamughal, by June 2026. The remaining stretch up to Infopark was expected to open later in December 2026. However, due to financial problems and delays in receiving loans, KMRL has now decided to open the entire 11.2-km corridor together in April 2027 instead of launching it in phases.
Reason Behind the Delay
The main reason for the delay was a hold-up in getting a foreign loan worth over ₹1,000 crore from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Because of this, many important civil construction works slowed down for several months. The Kerala government later approved the loan, and officials now expect construction work to speed up again.
Kochi Metro Pink Line
The Pink Line will connect JLN Stadium with Infopark in Kakkanad and will include 11 stations. The project is considered very important for improving connectivity to major IT hubs such as Infopark, Smart City, and Kinfra. Thousands of IT employees and daily commuters are expected to benefit from the metro extension as it may reduce heavy traffic congestion in the area.
Affect in Construction Progress
Construction progress was also affected by earlier delays in land acquisition and approval procedures. Although piling work has largely been completed, work on viaducts and piers moved slowly due to restricted fund flow. Officials said the new target is to complete all civil and electrical works by December 2026, followed by testing and safety checks before starting metro operations in April 2027.
