Kochi Metro Phase II Construction: The Kerala Government has Taken Measures to Tackle the Traffic Problems

The Kerala government has said it is taking the traffic and public difficulties caused by the second phase of Kochi Metro construction very seriously. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan made this statement in the Assembly on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, while replying to a motion raised by Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas.

He said that steps are already being taken to reduce traffic congestion on the stretch where the metro work is going on, from Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium to Infopark. To help manage traffic, trained local traffic wardens have been deployed by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) along with the traffic police. They are working between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

One major reason for traffic jams is the barricades placed for construction work, which have reduced the width of roads at several places. To improve the situation, barricades have been rearranged at St. Martin Church Junction, Kunnumpuram Junction, Padamughal Junction, and Eachamukku Junction. The government is also trying to fix other road-related problems along the route.

The traffic police have increased bike patrols and mobile patrolling by dividing the Palarivattom-Kakkanad stretch into three sectors. Extra police personnel have also been posted at major junctions and near schools and colleges.

To reduce congestion on the main road, traffic diversions and alternative routes are being publicised through the media, and signboards have been placed on parallel roads. The government is also considering a request from KMRL for ₹7.50 crore to improve and repair these parallel roads.

Since the monsoon season has started, drains along the metro construction stretch are being cleaned to prevent waterlogging. The Chief Minister also said that strict safety rules will be followed during the metro work, especially in view of earlier safety lapses. Contractors who break safety rules will face strict action.

He added that the government is giving special attention to completing the second phase of the Kochi Metro on time. Different agencies, including the district administration, Kerala Water Authority, KSEBL, traffic police, BSNL, and the Public Works Department, are working together regularly to solve problems and ensure smooth progress of the project.
