Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has increased parking charges at some of its busiest Metro stations to meet growing demand for parking spaces. The new move mainly targets people who use the parking facilities but do not actually travel by Metro. Such non-commuters will now have to pay higher parking fees.

Kochi Metro's Increased Parking Rates
The decision has been taken because parking areas at several popular Metro stations often remain crowded. Many people leave their vehicles at these stations for other purposes, reducing the number of spaces available for genuine Metro passengers. By increasing charges for non-commuters, KMRL hopes to discourage unnecessary parking and ensure that more spaces are available for Metro users.
Kochi has been facing increasing pressure on its parking infrastructure as the number of private vehicles continues to rise. At the same time, public parking spaces in the city are limited. This has made parking a major challenge, particularly around busy commercial areas and transport hubs.
KMRL's Modern Parking Facilities
KMRL has also been developing modern parking facilities to address the problem. Its automated multi-level parking facility at Vadakkekotta Metro station can accommodate around 100 cars. The facility uses technology to help drivers park their vehicles easily and operates with CCTV surveillance and limited human intervention.
The parking facility currently charges Rs 30 for the first two hours and Rs 25 for every additional hour. It operates from 30 minutes before the first Metro service until one hour after the last train of the day. KMRL is also planning similar multi-level parking facilities at Aluva and South Metro stations.
The latest increase in charges is therefore aimed at making better use of limited parking space. By giving priority to Metro commuters, KMRL expects to reduce parking congestion and encourage more people to use public transport for their daily journeys.
