Kerala is taking bold steps to transform itself into a women-friendly tourist destination by December 2025. This initiative, led by the Kerala Responsible Tourism Mission Society in collaboration with UN Women, focuses on making tourist spots safer and more accessible for women travelers. A series of gender audits have already been conducted at five key destinations, marking a significant move toward achieving this goal.

The five audited destinations-Kanthalloor, Kumarakom, Perumpalam, Kadalundi, and Kanakakunnu Palace-are renowned for their unique attractions and hold significant potential for women-friendly tourism.
The Five Audited Destinations
1. Kanthalloor:
Known as the "Fruit Basket of Kerala," Kanthalloor is famous for its cool climate and sprawling fruit orchards. It offers scenic beauty and opportunities for women travelers to enjoy peaceful nature walks, visit ancient temples, and explore eco-friendly activities.
2. Kumarakom:
A prime backwater destination, Kumarakom is celebrated for its houseboat cruises, bird sanctuary, and serene environment. Its commitment to sustainable tourism makes it an ideal spot for women who want a safe and tranquil getaway.
3. Perumpalam:
A charming island in Alappuzha district, Perumpalam is known for its lush greenery and local fishing culture. The destination offers a glimpse into Kerala's traditional lifestyle, with safe and guided village tours.
4. Kadalundi:
Famous for its bird sanctuary, Kadalundi is a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Women travelers can enjoy guided tours to explore the mangroves, spot rare birds, and experience the natural beauty of this serene destination.
5. Kanakakunnu Palace:
Located in the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram, this historic palace is a popular cultural hub. The palace hosts various art festivals and exhibitions, offering women a safe environment to immerse themselves in Kerala's rich culture.
Addressing Gaps in Tourism
Before the audits, a gap analysis of 70 tourist destinations revealed significant issues at 27 spots. While three destinations faced serious infrastructure challenges, 17 showed moderate deficiencies. On the brighter side, eight locations, including Kumarakom and Kannur Fort, were praised for their facilities for women.
To tackle these issues, a detailed action plan is being developed to address safety, infrastructure, and accessibility. This plan will ensure these spots are officially declared women-friendly in the near future.
Kerala's commitment was further emphasized during a women's conference on Gender Inclusive and Responsible Tourism. The state's Tourism Secretary, K Biju, highlighted the importance of safety for solo women travelers and expressed Kerala's aim to integrate tourism into everyday life while ensuring a culture of safety and inclusivity.
With 12 more destinations proposed for gender auditing awaiting approval, Kerala's efforts are paving the way for a more inclusive tourism industry.
Kerala's mission to become a women-friendly tourist destination is not just about improving infrastructure but also creating a culture where women feel safe and confident exploring the state. This initiative is an inspiring example of how tourism can champion gender equality and inclusivity, setting a benchmark for destinations worldwide.
