Kerala Weather Update: Heavy Rain Likely to Continue Across State; Yellow Alert Issued in Multiple Districts

Kerala is expected to continue receiving widespread rainfall over the next few days as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of persistent rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across several districts. A yellow alert has been issued in multiple parts of the state for May 15, 2026, while coastal authorities have also imposed fishing restrictions in parts of the Arabian Sea due to rough weather conditions.

According to the latest weather updates, rainfall activity is likely to remain active across both southern and northern Kerala, with isolated heavy rain expected in several districts. Officials have advised residents to remain cautious, especially in areas vulnerable to waterlogging, strong winds and lightning activity.

Districts Under Yellow Alert

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the following districts on May 15:

  • Thiruvananthapuram
  • Kollam
  • Alappuzha
  • Malappuram
  • Kozhikode
  • Wayanad

A yellow alert indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours at isolated places.

For May 16, yellow alert conditions are expected in:

  • Palakkad
  • Malappuram
  • Kozhikode
  • Wayanad

On May 17, alerts are likely to continue in:

  • Kannur
  • Kasaragod
  • Thunderstorm and Strong Wind Warning

The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph in isolated regions. In some coastal and open areas, wind speeds may briefly touch 60 kmph.

Parts of southern Kerala, including Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, may witness sudden rain spells along with lightning activity during the day and evening hours.

Officials stated that the current weather pattern is being influenced by atmospheric circulation systems over the Bay of Bengal and nearby coastal regions, which are supporting moisture inflow into Kerala.

Fishing Restricted Along Kerala Coast

Authorities have temporarily prohibited fishing activities along the Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts due to rough sea conditions and strong surface winds.

The weather department warned that sea conditions may remain unsafe for fishermen because of:

  • Strong winds between 40 and 50 kmph
  • Sudden weather deterioration
  • High wave activity in coastal belts

However, there are currently no major fishing restrictions reported along the Karnataka coast.

Advisory for Residents

With thunderstorms and lightning expected in several districts, residents have been asked to follow safety precautions seriously.

  • Safety Measures During Thunderstorms
  • Stay indoors during lightning activity
  • Avoid standing under trees or near electric poles
  • Disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms
  • Keep windows and doors closed during strong winds
  • Avoid terrace activities and open playgrounds during cloudy weather
  • Do not use wired telephones during lightning activity
  • Avoid water-related activities during thunderstorms

Authorities also advised motorists to avoid parking vehicles under trees and to remain inside vehicles during severe lightning conditions if immediate shelter is unavailable.

Rain Likely to Continue for Next Few Days

Weather officials expect intermittent rainfall to continue across Kerala for the next several days, particularly in central and northern districts. Residents in hilly and low-lying areas have been advised to remain alert for localised flooding, slippery roads and traffic disruptions during peak rainfall periods.

People are advised to regularly monitor official IMD bulletins and district administration advisories for further updates on weather alerts and emergency instructions.
