Kerala is set to remain under the influence of an active weather system as heavy rainfall activity continues across several districts, bringing fresh alerts from weather authorities. Weather conditions across Kerala intensified on May 23, with rainfall activity increasing over central and northern regions of the state. Forecasts indicate that rain may continue over multiple districts with the possibility of isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms.

According to weather alerts issued for the state, yellow alerts have been announced for several districts, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall at isolated places. Districts placed under weather watch for May 23 include Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kannur. Further alerts are expected to extend into additional districts over the following days as rainfall patterns shift across the state.

Meteorological definitions classify heavy rainfall under the yellow alert category as precipitation ranging between approximately 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours, which can create localised waterlogging and traffic disruptions in vulnerable areas.

Rain, Thunderstorms And Humidity To Dominate Weather Conditions

Current weather conditions across Kerala indicate a wet and humid atmosphere. Several regions are witnessing light to moderate rainfall activity along with a rise in moisture levels.

Temperatures are expected to remain around 30-32°C during daytime hours, while night temperatures could settle around 27-28°C. Humidity levels are expected to remain high, adding to discomfort despite occasional cooling from rain showers.

Thunderstorm activity may increase during afternoon and evening hours. Weather projections suggest a chance of lightning and scattered rain spells through the day, while intermittent showers could continue during the night in some regions.

Fishing Activities Suspended Till May 26

Authorities have continued restrictions on fishing operations along the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coastal regions due to deteriorating sea conditions.

Strong winds are expected to impact coastal and adjoining sea areas with wind speeds ranging from 40-50 kmph, with gusts potentially reaching 60 kmph at times. Rough sea conditions are expected to persist until May 26, prompting authorities to advise fishermen against venturing into the sea.

Safety Advisory Issued For Residents

With thunderstorms and lightning activity expected in isolated places, residents have been advised to remain cautious during changing weather conditions.

People are advised to avoid standing under trees during lightning activity, stay indoors during thunderstorms, keep electrical appliances unplugged when necessary and avoid open spaces during periods of intense rain and strong winds.

The active weather pattern suggests Kerala may continue to witness a wet spell over the coming days, keeping both residents and local authorities on alert as monsoon-like conditions strengthen across the state.
