The intensity of rainfall has reduced across Kerala as the active monsoon has weakened. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that heavy rain is likely to continue in some parts of the state for the next couple of days due to the influence of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal.
Kerala Under Orange Alert on Thursday
The IMD has issued an orange alert for seven districts on Thursday, warning of very heavy rainfall. These districts are Kasaragod, Kannur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha. The remaining seven districts are under a yellow alert, which indicates the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall.
Kerala's Rains to Continue Due to Several Weather Conditions
According to the latest IMD weather bulletin, rain activity will continue in parts of Kerala due to the combined effect of upper air cyclonic circulations over South Interior Karnataka and nearby areas, south coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and the southeast Bay of Bengal. These weather systems are expected to keep conditions favourable for rain over the next few days.
Meanwhile, no place in Kerala recorded extremely heavy or very heavy rainfall during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Wednesday, August 5. The highest rainfall was recorded at Panathur in Kasaragod, which received 9 cm of rain. This was followed by Thodupuzha and Udumbannoor in Idukki, and Muliyar in Kasaragod, where 7 cm of rainfall was recorded.
Advisory for Kerala Residents
The IMD has also warned about swell waves measuring 1.2 to 1.4 metres along parts of the Kerala coast, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha, until Thursday night. Due to the possibility of strong waves, fishermen have been advised to operate their boats carefully. People visiting beaches or taking part in recreational activities near the sea have also been urged to remain cautious and follow safety instructions.
