Kerala Tourism's commendable efforts in promoting sustainable and women-inclusive initiatives have been recognized with the prestigious Global Responsible Tourism Award 2023. The state's Responsible Tourism Mission received the accolade in the 'Best for Local Sourcing - Craft and Food' category, a testament to its successful implementation of sustainable practices.

Paving the Way for Sustainable Tourism
Kerala's Responsible Tourism Mission, known for its dedication to environmentally conscious tourism, shared the award with Eswatini, a country renowned for its eco-friendly Ngwenya Glass. The recognition came as a result of the state's significant strides in fostering responsible tourism initiatives and linking women-led small and medium-sized enterprises to the tourism sector.
Minister of State Tourism, P A Mohammed Riyas, emphasized that the award underscores Kerala's impactful model for sustainable tourism, reflecting its commitment to preserving natural and cultural heritage while bolstering local communities.

Women-Centric Initiatives and UN Support
A key aspect of Kerala's sustainable tourism model involves empowering women through various tourism projects. With the support of UN Women, the state has been able to champion women-friendly initiatives, promoting gender equality and providing women with significant opportunities within the tourism industry. The Kerala Responsible Tourism Mission has been at the forefront of driving these projects, aiming to create a more inclusive and sustainable tourism landscape.
Consistent Recognition and Acknowledgment
This is not the first time Kerala's Responsible Tourism Mission has received international acclaim. Last year, the Water STREET project in Maravanthuruthu, Kottayam district, was also honored with the Responsible Tourism Global Award. The recognition highlights the mission's consistent efforts to promote the state's rich cultural and culinary heritage, providing authentic local experiences for tourists while ensuring that local communities benefit from these initiatives.

Advocating for Sustainable Practices
Established in 2007, Kerala's Responsible Tourism Mission has been instrumental in fostering sustainable and inclusive practices within the tourism industry. By emphasizing responsible tourism in diverse geographical regions, including beach destinations like Kovalam, backwaters in Kumarakom, wildlife in Thekkady, and hill stations in Wayanad, Kerala has set an example for the global tourism sector.
The award serves as a reminder of Kerala's commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism, showcasing its dedication to preserving the natural beauty and cultural heritage that make the state a beloved destination for travelers from around the world.
