Heavy rain continued to batter Kerala on Thursday, prompting authorities to issue fresh weather warnings and take precautionary measures across the state.
Kerala Rain Alert on 7 August
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. An Orange Alert has been issued today for Kasaragod, while Yellow Alerts have been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad.
Kerala Rains Caused Havoc
The continuous downpour has caused flooding in many low-lying areas, waterlogging on roads, overflowing rivers and rising concerns about landslides, especially in hilly districts. Several people have been shifted to relief camps as a precaution, while disaster response teams remain on high alert. Authorities are closely monitoring dams, rivers and vulnerable locations as more rain is expected over the next few days.
Kerala Schools to Remain Closed Today
Due to the severe weather, district administrations have declared a holiday for schools, colleges and other educational institutions in several affected districts. However, scheduled public examinations in some places will be held as planned unless local authorities announce otherwise. Students and parents have been advised to check official district notifications for the latest updates.
Advisory for Kerala Residents
The IMD has warned that the active southwest monsoon is likely to bring more heavy to very heavy rainfall across central and northern Kerala over the next 48 hours. There is also a risk of flash floods, landslides and mudslides in vulnerable regions. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea because of rough weather and high waves along the Kerala coast.
The state government has asked people living near rivers, landslide-prone areas and low-lying regions to remain alert and follow instructions from local authorities. Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flooded roads and be prepared to move to safer places if advised. Emergency teams, including the police, fire force and disaster management officials, have been deployed to respond quickly to any weather-related incidents.
