Kerala may witness limited power restrictions between 6 PM and midnight until June 30, as the state faces increasing pressure on electricity availability amid rising demand and lower-than-expected relief from seasonal conditions.
The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has indicated that restrictions may be introduced on a limited scale if required to manage the growing demand-supply gap. The move comes after electricity consumption continued to remain higher than projections across the state.

Why Kerala Is Facing Power Pressure
According to officials, Kerala is currently dealing with an estimated power shortfall of around 900 MW, despite drawing electricity from domestic generation, central allocations and long-term purchase arrangements.
The situation has been linked to:
- Higher electricity consumption across India
- Continued warm conditions associated with El Niño-related patterns
- Delayed cooling impact despite the monsoon season
- Rising household and commercial power usage
Officials noted that Kerala's daily electricity demand has reached nearly 4,900 MW, significantly above earlier projections.
Evening Restrictions Likely Till June 30
KSEB has indicated that power regulation, if imposed, will largely be considered during peak evening demand hours from 6 PM to 12 AM.
Authorities clarified that the restrictions are expected to remain limited and controlled, rather than statewide continuous shutdowns. Similar short-duration restrictions had already been introduced in select areas recently as part of load management efforts.
Government Holds Emergency Review Meeting
The evolving power situation was reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by the state's electricity leadership along with senior officials.
The meeting focused on:
- Procuring additional electricity wherever possible
- Monitoring daily demand trends
- Preventing larger disruptions during peak hours
- Ensuring essential services remain unaffected
Officials have also been authorised to take further measures if demand increases beyond manageable levels.
What Residents Can Do
With demand expected to stay elevated through June, residents may consider:
- Charging essential devices before evening hours
- Planning high-power appliance use earlier in the day
- Keeping backup lighting available
- Following local utility updates for area-specific advisories
For now, authorities have stressed that the restrictions are precautionary and intended to maintain grid stability while meeting demand across the state.
