Kerala Power Alert: Possible Power Restrictions Likely in Four Districts for Seven Days

Residents in parts of northern Kerala may experience intermittent power disruptions over the next seven days after the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) issued a warning regarding maintenance work linked to a major transformer fault at the Kozhikode 400 kV substation.

According to information shared by KSEB and Power Grid Corporation officials, partial power restrictions may affect districts including Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod during peak evening hours as urgent repair work continues.

Why Power Disruptions Are Expected

The disruption has been linked to a technical fault in the 220 kV bushing of a transformer at the Power Grid Corporation's 400 kV substation in Kozhikode. Officials stated that the damaged transformer has been taken out of service for emergency maintenance work.

Power Grid Corporation authorities reportedly informed KSEB that repair operations may take nearly seven days to complete. During this period, electricity supply management and load restrictions may be required in several northern Kerala districts to balance demand and avoid larger outages.

Districts Likely to Be Affected

KSEB has indicated that the following districts could face intermittent or partial power restrictions:

  • Kozhikode
  • Wayanad
  • Kannur
  • Kasaragod

The restrictions are expected to remain in place for approximately one week starting from Tuesday.

Peak Hour Restrictions Expected

Reports suggest that the power restrictions are most likely during peak electricity demand hours between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. These evening hours generally witness increased domestic and commercial power consumption across the region.

Officials clarified that the restrictions may not result in continuous blackouts across all areas simultaneously. Instead, temporary load management measures and controlled supply interruptions could be implemented depending on demand conditions.

What Residents Should Expect

People living in the affected districts have been advised to remain prepared for possible temporary interruptions in electricity supply, particularly during evening hours.

Residents may experience:

  • Short-duration power cuts
  • Voltage fluctuations in some areas
  • Temporary load restrictions during peak demand periods
  • Delays in restoration during emergency maintenance work

Commercial establishments, households and small businesses in affected districts are expected to monitor local electricity board updates for feeder-wise announcements or revised schedules.

Role of the Kozhikode 400 kV Substation

The Kozhikode 400 kV substation operated by the Power Grid Corporation plays an important role in transmitting high-voltage electricity across parts of northern Kerala. Electricity distributed through KSEB reaches homes, institutions and commercial establishments after being routed through this transmission network.

Due to the transformer malfunction, electricity load handling capacity in the region has reportedly been affected, making temporary restrictions necessary until repair work is completed.

Advisory for Consumers

Consumers in the affected districts are being encouraged to reduce non-essential electricity usage during evening peak hours wherever possible. Officials believe that responsible power consumption may help reduce pressure on the grid while maintenance work is underway.

Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation and issue further updates depending on repair progress and power demand conditions across northern Kerala.
