To make it easier for pilgrims to travel, a ropeway connecting Sonprayag with the Kedarnath shrine in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district will shortly be built. According to reports, the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) has approved the construction of a ropeway between Sonprayag and the Kedarnath shrine in the Rudraprayag district, which is expected to significantly increase religious tourism.

Cost, length, and altitude of the ropeway:

It is anticipated that the 13-kilometer-long ropeway construction project will cost about Rs 1,200 crore. The ropeway's elevation of 11,500 feet (3,500 m) above sea level makes it one of the highest ropeways in the world.

The Uttarakhand government had earlier this year declared that construction on the ropeway project will shortly begin. The project's Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already been created. Although the state wildlife board had already approved these projects in June, the final approval was still pending from the NBWL due to the significant opposition from environmentalists in the ecologically vulnerable Himalayan region as a total of 26.43 hectares of forest land will be given to the state government as part of the project.

In addition to other choices that were also made by the highest committee of the NBWL, the board reached the final decision during its 70th standing meeting held, which was presided over by Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav.

After the meeting, Yadav claimed that the discussion focused on proposals submitted by the states and UTs regarding the use of land in protected areas and eco-sensitive zones for the supply of drinking water, the construction of telecom towers, the building of bridle tracks, and the installation of ropeways for the convenience of pilgrims in difficult terrain.
The Minister mentioned the ropeway decision and mentioned that the committee had suggested building it to help the thousands of pilgrims traveling to Kedarnath Dham and during the Kedarnath Yatra.

The ropeway, according to the officials, will drastically cut down on the time it takes people to go to the Kedarnath shrine. Currently, it takes a day for pilgrims to walk the 16 kilometers from Gaurikund to the shrine, but with the ropeway, they would be able to get there in just one hour.

At the moment, pilgrims can use a helicopter service to travel to the Himalayan shrine. Over 14.59 million pilgrims have already visited the shrine since May 8, when Kedarnath Dham's doors were opened, and over 1.3 lakh of those pilgrims used the helicopter service.
