Travel to Japan for Indian passport holders just got easier! Starting April 1, Japan has launched its much-anticipated eVisa programme, eliminating the need for physical visa stickers. Now, travellers can apply for their visas electronically through Japan Visa Application Centres managed by VFS Global. This streamlined process allows visitors to enter Japan for up to 90 days for tourism purposes.

While the application process remains the same - applicants still need to submit their applications to the Visa Application Centres overseen by VFS Global - there's a significant change in how visas are issued. Successful applicants will now receive electronic visas instead of traditional visa stickers affixed to their passports. Upon approval, travellers will be provided with a 'visa issuance notice' on their mobile devices, which must be presented upon arrival at the airport. It's important to have internet access for this process, as any format other than a digital visa issuance notice will not be considered valid.
Who is eligible for the Japan eVisa programme? Citizens and residents of various countries and regions, including Brazil, Taiwan, Singapore, UAE, South Africa, UK, Canada, Australia, Cambodia, Saudi Arabia, and the USA, are eligible. Additionally, Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India are also included.
Here's a step-by-step guide to the application process:
1. Visit the official website of the Japan Visa Application Centre managed by VFS Global.
2. Choose the "Temporary Visitor Visa" option, review the requirements, and download the application form. Fill it out accurately and prepare photocopies of the required documents.
3. Schedule an appointment at the Visa Application Centre to submit your application. Once booked, you'll receive a confirmation email with your appointment details.
4. Submit your completed application form at the centre and wait for an email notification regarding the status of your application. Successful applicants will receive an electronic visa issuance notice on their mobile devices.
5. At the airport check-in, display the electronic visa issuance notice on your device. Scan the barcode and input the required details to access the notice.
During the application process, some individuals may be required to appear in person for an interview at the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over their place of residence.
With the launch of the eVisa programme, travelling to Japan has become more convenient and hassle-free for Indian passport holders. So, if you're planning a trip to Japan for tourism, take advantage of this new system and enjoy your journey to the Land of the Rising Sun!
