ISRO's Meteorological Satellite INSAT-3DS: How Will It Help in Disaster Management?

ISRO has achieved a significant milestone with the successful development of the INSAT-3DS satellite. This space mission carries immense importance as it seeks to enhance weather monitoring and forecasting capabilities within the INSAT system. INSAT-3DS assumes a crucial role in delivering vital meteorological observations, monitoring both land and ocean surfaces, and strengthening disaster warning capabilities.

ISROs Meteorological Satellite INSAT-3D

The satellite's development took place at ISRO's UR Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru, and it stands as a user-funded project by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), highlighting the effective collaboration between scientific agencies.

In terms of technical details, INSAT-3DS utilizes the renowned I-2k bus platform developed by ISRO. It boasts a Lift-Off Mass of 2275 kg, featuring sophisticated instruments such as a 6-channel Imager for meteorological observations and a 19-channel Sounder for surface monitoring.

As part of the Third Generation Meteorological Satellite series, INSAT-3DS follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, namely INSAT-3D (2013) and INSAT-3DR (2016). This series marks a significant stride in advancing meteorological capabilities, showcasing India's prowess in satellite technology and its commitment to enhancing weather-related services.

INSAT-3DS in Disaster Management:

The role of INSAT-3DS in disaster management is invaluable:

1. Early Warning Systems:
By monitoring weather patterns, cyclones, and extreme events, INSAT-3DS provides real-time data on cloud cover, precipitation, and wind patterns, facilitating early warnings for natural calamities.

2. Cyclone Tracking and Prediction:
The satellite's instruments track cyclones from formation, aiding in predicting their trajectory, intensity, and landfall locations, enabling timely evacuation and preparedness measures.

3. Flood Monitoring:
INSAT-3DS observes rainfall patterns and river levels, assisting in assessing flood-prone areas, monitoring water flow, and aiding in relief efforts.

4. Forest Fire Detection:
Through thermal anomaly detection, INSAT-3DS alerts authorities to potential forest fires, enabling rapid response and mitigation.

5. Agricultural Planning:
By providing data on soil moisture, vegetation health, and crop conditions, INSAT-3DS assists farmers in making informed decisions regarding irrigation and crop management.

6. Earthquake and Landslide Monitoring:
While indirectly related to earthquakes, INSAT-3DS data aids in identifying areas prone to landslides and soil instability.

7. Communication during Disasters:
INSAT-3DS supports satellite-based communication during emergencies, ensuring connectivity for disaster response teams and affected communities.

INSAT-3DS stands as a vigilant sentinel, empowering disaster management agencies with critical information to save lives, protect property, and enhance resilience in the face of adversity.
