In a lot of places, including India, people frequently travel by train as it is a practical and economical method of covering large distances. However, one of the challenges faced by passengers, especially those traveling in general coaches, is the availability of food and water during the journey.

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has made a praiseworthy action to address this issue by supplying packaged water and affordable meals for general coach passengers, improving the comfort and convenience of their travel.
An important improvement that solves the long-standing problem of inadequate food and water facilities in trains is the offering of packed food and water to customers traveling in general coaches. With the introduction of packed water and food, passengers can now have access to safe and hygienic meals and drinking water throughout their journey.
What type of meals will be available?
So, IRCTC has divided the meals into two simple categories in which the first category is for INR 20 only with "7 pooris, dry aaloo sabji, and pickle". The second category has kind of an assortment of South Indian meals such as rice, chhole, rajma, kulche, Khichdi, bhature, pao-bhaji & masala dosa that too in just INR 50 each.

From where does the passenger can get these meals?
The Railway Board has given the relevant officials orders to set up counters at the platform near the GS coaches where they will provide affordable bottled water and low-cost meals.
According to the statement, railway zones will select where to put these counters in order to queue them up with GS coaches on platforms. According to officials, attempts are being made to provide 200 ml drinking water glasses at these packed water and meal counters.
Please note that the option is presently available at 51 stations and will be available at 13 more stations starting from today.

What are GS coaches in Indian Railways?
Coaches with general seating are commonly referred to as GS coaches. It is an unreserved second-class coach where anyone having a general ticket from the railway counter can sit, no matter they have confirmed reservation or not. All they need is to have is a valid general/unreserved ticket from counter. Normally, every train, including mail and express trains, has at least two GS coaches, one at the front of the train and one at the back.
