Insurance for Explorers: Stay Covered While Discovering Karnataka's Ecological Wonders
The state of Karnataka, known for its natural beauty and pleasant weather, attracts visitors from around the world year-round. Adventure and nature enthusiasts particularly favor the numerous eco-tourism sites available in Karnataka. However, recent incidents have raised concerns about visitor safety, leading to a decline in visits to many natural areas of the state.
Taking these concerns into account, the Karnataka Forest Department has decided to introduce insurance coverage for visitors to eco-tourism sites. This decision was prompted by a letter from wildlife conservationist Giridhar Kulkarni, who emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of tourists participating in activities such as kayaking, safaris, rafting, dolphin rides, trekking, and waterfall visits.
Kulkarni pointed out the risks involved in these activities, including the potential for elephant attacks, drowning, and even partial disability. He highlighted that neighboring Kerala provides insurance for tourists visiting eco-sites and referred to the Karnataka Tourism Policy 2020-26, which prioritizes creating a sustainable tourism ecosystem that prioritizes visitor safety and a high-quality experience.
In his letter, Kulkarni recommended that the State Government and Forest Department collaborate with insurance companies to provide coverage for visitors. He suggested that the insurance cover be applicable only to those who have purchased tickets for eco-tourism sites, with the understanding that coverage would not include damages caused by communicable diseases or epidemics.
In May, Kulkarni informed senior forest department officials that jungle lodges and resorts in Karnataka and Kerala, along with the forest department, were already offering insurance coverage for visitors. This initiative aims to enhance the overall safety and security of tourists exploring eco-tourism sites in Karnataka.
