Indonesia's Ruang Volcano Eruption: Thousands Evacuated, Tsunami Warning Issued

The eruption of Ruang volcano in Indonesia prompted authorities to issue the highest alert level, leading to the evacuation of over 12,000 residents due to tsunami fears. The volcanic activity, highlighted by dramatic lightning, underscores Indonesia's vulnerability as part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

On a recent Tuesday, Indonesia witnessed the awe-inspiring eruption of Ruang volcano, which sent lava spewing into the night sky, illuminated by dramatic lightning flashes. This natural spectacle forced the Indonesian authorities to escalate their alert status to the highest level and initiate an extensive evacuation process. More than 12,000 residents from the nearby Tagulandang island were moved to safer grounds due to fears of a potential tsunami, triggered by volcanic material collapsing into the ocean.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) had issued a tsunami warning on the same Tuesday morning, which remained in effect into the afternoon. The PVMBG, closely monitoring the situation, advised locals to maintain a safe distance from the volcano. Following the eruption, which occurred in the early hours, the Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency (BNPB) confirmed that all 843 inhabitants of Ruang island, where the volcano is located, were evacuated to Manado, North Sulawesi's capital. Additionally, residents of Tagulandang island were relocated to the northern Siau island.

This eruption is part of a series of volcanic activities this month that previously led to the evacuation of hundreds and the temporary closure of Manado's provincial airport. Some homes sustained damage during these earlier eruptions. The PVMBG had also raised concerns about the risk of a tsunami at that time.

Visuals from the disaster agency captured the moment lightning struck above Ruang's crater, with red clouds of lava and rocks being ejected into the air. According to the volcanology agency, the eruption column soared to a height of 5 kilometres (3.1 miles). The agency has since expanded the evacuation radius from 6 to 7 kilometres around the volcano, cautioning against the possibility of more "explosive eruptions".

Ruang island, located roughly 100 km from Manado, has also experienced a significant increase in seismic activity and deep volcanic earthquakes, as reported by the disaster agency. This recent eruption underscores the volatile nature of Indonesia's geographical landscape, which is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire known for its frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
