Indian Railways to Complete the First High-Speed Trial of the Hydrogen-Powered Train

India has achieved an important milestone in green transportation as its first hydrogen-powered train has completed its final high-speed trial. The trial was conducted on the Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana on June 26, 2026, where the train reached a top speed of 120 kmph. The successful test is a major step towards introducing hydrogen-powered passenger trains on the Indian Railways network.

Hydrogen-Powered Train

The hydrogen train has been developed as part of Indian Railways' plan to reduce pollution and promote clean energy. Instead of using diesel, the train runs on hydrogen fuel-cell technology. The fuel cells generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water vapour as the direct emission. This makes the train an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional diesel-powered trains while also reducing air and noise pollution.

Hydrogen-Powered Train on Jind-Sonipat Route

The Jind-Sonipat route was selected as the pilot corridor because it provides suitable conditions for testing the new technology under real operating conditions. To support the project, Indian Railways has also established dedicated hydrogen production, storage, and refuelling facilities at Jind. The train has been equipped with advanced safety features, including hydrogen leak detectors, flame detection systems, and continuous monitoring technology to ensure safe operations.

Although the final speed trial has been completed successfully, the train must still complete the remaining regulatory approvals and operational formalities before entering regular passenger service. Railway officials monitored the train's performance throughout the trial, including its safety, stability and braking systems, to ensure it is ready for commercial operations.

The successful trial places India among a small group of countries that have developed hydrogen-powered railway technology. It also marks a major step in Indian Railways' efforts to modernise its network, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and move towards cleaner, more sustainable transportation. Once the remaining approvals are completed, India's first hydrogen-powered train is expected to begin carrying passengers, opening a new chapter in the country's railway history.
