In a striking display of how integral trains are to India's travel fabric, the Indian Railways reported an overwhelming surge in passenger numbers this April. From the 1st to the 21st of the month, over 41 crore individuals utilized train services, underscoring the system's vital role in facilitating mobility across the country. Particularly during the last weekend of this period, April 20 and 21, the railways witnessed 3.38 crore passengers, marking it as one of the busiest times with a total of 13.69 crore travelers in just the last week.
To accommodate this surge, especially with the onset of summer breaks, the Indian Railways initiated several measures aimed at enhancing passenger services. Noteworthy among these was the operation of additional train trips, a significant increase of 43% over the previous year's figures. This proactive approach was aimed at managing the steep rise in passenger numbers effectively.
Zonal Railways were instructed to ensure essential services, such as the availability of drinking water at stations, were bolstered. Furthermore, comprehensive crowd control strategies were implemented at major stations. This included the deployment of senior officers to oversee and regulate the flow of passengers, ensuring smooth movement and safety for all.RPF on Alert
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) played a crucial role during this period, with detailed instructions from the Railway Board to adopt a 'Queue system' for entry into General Class coaches. This was complemented by the presence of skilled RPF personnel in CCTV Control Rooms, monitoring crowded areas and providing real-time assistance. To further ensure the safety of travelers, both Government Railway Police (GRP) and RPF staff were deployed at critical points like foot-over bridges to smooth out the flow of crowds and prevent any potential mishaps.
In addition to safety measures, the railways also focused on passenger convenience by setting up additional help desks and counters. These facilities were designed to aid passengers with their inquiries, making their journey more comfortable. Senior officials involved in passenger services indicated that the Railway Board is closely monitoring the situation, ready to make adjustments and arrangements as necessary to cater to the evolving demands of train travel.
This massive movement of people via the railways not only underscores the network's capacity to handle large volumes of passengers but also highlights the critical role it plays in connecting various parts of the country. As summer progresses, the Indian Railways continues to adapt and evolve, ensuring that it remains a reliable mode of transport for millions of Indians.
