The Indian Railways is set to introduce a groundbreaking addition to its transportation network: the Vande Metro, a revolutionary intra-city transit system inspired by the success of the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat trains. Following the triumphant integration of the Vande Bharat Express trains into India's railway infrastructure, the Railways is now gearing up to launch the country's inaugural Vande Metro.

According to a senior official closely involved with the project, preparations are underway to commence trial runs of the Vande Metro from July 2024, with the aim of making its services available to the public at the earliest opportunity. Engineered with cutting-edge technology to achieve rapid acceleration and deceleration, the Vande Metro will incorporate a host of innovative features tailored to meet the transit needs of urban commuters.
"We plan to roll out the Vande Metro trains this year. Testing will commence in the coming months. In addition to automated doors and superior comfort, the trains will offer several amenities not currently available in metro systems," the official disclosed. Further details regarding these additional features, along with visual representations, are slated to be shared with the public in the near future.
The air-conditioned Vande Metro is poised to revolutionize the realm of travel, boasting a maximum speed of 130 kilometers per hour. As per railway sources, the train will feature a distinctive coach structure, with four coaches forming a single unit and a minimum of 12 coaches constituting a complete Vande Metro train. Initially, the Railways will introduce a minimum of 12 Vande Metro coaches, with the potential for expansion to 16 coaches based on demand for the service.
Manufactured at the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, the coaches are nearing completion. The decision regarding the inaugural city to receive the Vande Bharat Metro is currently under deliberation. Expected to be operational by 2025, these modern trains will slash travel times by up to two hours compared to conventional trains, with the first prototype nearing completion.
Here are the distinguishing features of the Vande Metro that set it apart:
1. Smaller Size: Unlike the 16-coach Vande Bharat Express, the Vande Metro comprises eight coaches, making it ideal for shorter routes and frequent shuttles.
2. Purpose: Designed to connect cities separated by distances of less than 100 kilometers, the Vande Metro caters to commuters traveling between nearby urban centers for work or leisure.
3. Frequency: Engineered for high-frequency operation, these trains will run multiple times per day, providing passengers with rapid, shuttle-like service.
4. Advanced Features: The Vande Metro boasts several cutting-edge features, including:
- Operating Speed: Up to 130 km/h.
- Fully Air-Conditioned: Ensures comfortable travel in all weather conditions.
- Fully Sealed Gangways: Enhances passenger safety and convenience.
- Lightweight Car Body: Improves efficiency and speed.
- Contemporary Design: Features lightweight, cushioned, and ergonomic seats.
- Automatic Plug-In Doors: Equipped with four sets of wider doors for efficient boarding and alighting.
- Aerodynamically Designed Driving End: Streamlined for optimal performance.
- CCTV Cameras and LCD Displays: Enhances security and provides passenger information.
The Vande Metro represents a significant stride towards providing efficient, comfortable, and frequent rail connectivity for short-distance travel within India. With its state-of-the-art features and commitment to enhancing urban mobility, the Vande Metro is poised to redefine intra-city transit for millions of commuters across the country.
