Indian Railways, in collaboration with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), has introduced a new initiative called 'Economy Meals' to enhance the dining experience for rail passengers across the country. This move aims to provide passengers, especially those traveling in general coaches, with quality, affordable, and hygienic meals during their journey, particularly amidst the anticipated surge in passenger traffic during the summer season.

The Economy Meals concept offers two types of meals, catering to varying preferences and budgets of passengers. Priced at Rs 20, the Economy Meals option provides passengers with a satisfying and budget-friendly meal option on the go. For those seeking a lighter bite, the Snack Meals option is available at Rs 50. These meal counters are now operational at over 100 stations across the Indian Railways network, with 23 counters in 12 railway stations on the South Central Railway.
Among the stations where this service is available include Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Renigunta, Guntakal, Tirupati, Rajahmundry, Vikarabad, Pakala, Dhone, Nandyal, Purna, and Aurangabad railway stations. In the Vijayawada Division, these meals can be purchased at the Vijayawada and Rajahmundry Station Refreshment Rooms and Jan Ahaar units, conveniently located near the general second-class (GS) coaches on platforms.
Narendra A Patil, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Vijayawada, highlighted that the initiative is designed to meet passengers' dietary requirements while ensuring both convenience and affordability throughout their journey. The availability of these meals near general coaches aims to make it easier for passengers to access and enjoy a wholesome meal during their travels.
This initiative follows a successful pilot run conducted at approximately 51 stations last year across the Indian Railways network. By expanding the availability of Economy Meals to more stations and divisions, Indian Railways aims to further enhance the overall dining experience for passengers, offering them a wider range of meal options to choose from at pocket-friendly prices.
As passenger comfort and satisfaction remain a top priority for Indian Railways, initiatives like Economy Meals underscore the commitment of the railway authorities to continuously innovate and improve services to meet the evolving needs of passengers. With the introduction of affordable and hygienic meal options, rail passengers can now enjoy a more convenient and satisfying dining experience during their journeys across the country.
