Indian Railways has approved a ₹497 crore project to double the Chouk-Karjat railway section in Maharashtra. The 10.86-km stretch is part of the Panvel-Chouk-Karjat route and is an important railway link for both passenger and freight traffic, which connects Raigad district with the Mumbai suburban region.
Indian Railways Approved the Chouk-Karjat Rail Section
At present, the Chouk-Karjat section has only a single railway track. The addition of a second track is expected to increase capacity and allow trains to move more smoothly. The project has been approved under Indian Railways' broader programme for doubling, tripling, quadrupling, flyovers and bypass works aimed at increasing capacity across the railway network.
Once the doubling work is completed, the section will be able to handle five additional passenger trains in each direction every day, allowing more passenger services to operate on the route, while the additional track can also help reduce delays caused by limited space for train movement.
The project is also expected to improve freight transportation. According to the Ministry of Railways, the upgraded section will provide an additional freight capacity of 18.35 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The extra track is expected to make it easier for goods trains to operate and reduce the time they spend waiting on the route.
The Chouk-Karjat stretch is used by both passenger and goods trains, making the capacity expansion significant for train operations along the Panvel-Chouk-Karjat route. By adding another track, Indian Railways aims to improve the movement of both types of trains and address the capacity constraints on the existing single-line section.
The ₹497 crore project is therefore focused on increasing railway capacity, supporting additional passenger services, and improving freight movement along this important route in Maharashtra.
