Srinagar Homes to Receive Unique IDs Under Digital India Initiative
The government of Jammu and Kashmir has unveiled a plan to issue unique identification numbers (UIDs) to more than 200,000 households in Srinagar city. These UIDs will serve as a digital record for each household, encompassing details such as their address, family size, utility bills, and other pertinent information.

Empowering Srinagar Through Digital India
This initiative is aligned with the broader Digital India program, which aspires to propel India into a digitally advanced society and knowledge-driven economy. The primary goal is to provide residents with online services without the need for physical visits to government offices or extensive paperwork.
Clarifications on Property Ownership and Taxation Concerns
Government officials assert that the issuance of UIDs will not impact property ownership rights or introduce property taxes in the region. However, some local residents remain skeptical, expressing concerns about potential property tax implications.
Streamlining Services and Enhancing Accessibility
Arun Kumar Mehta, Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, highlighted the significant advantages of UIDs for residents. He emphasized the government's commitment to providing efficient and accessible online services. In his words, "We don't want any queues in offices; everything can be done online. We are number one in the number of online services provided in the Union territory. People need to be aware that they don't need to visit offices, but all services will be provided online. This will benefit the locals a lot."
Implementing UIDs with GIS Mapping and QR Codes
The UIDs will be generated using Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping technology and QR codes. The government has already initiated the survey and verification process for assigning these unique IDs. The project's completion is anticipated by December 2023.
