IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall in Kerala, Bengaluru Grapples with Waterlogged Roads

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has given a warning about heavy rain with thunder and lightning in three districts of the state today. This heavy rain is expected in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Thrissur districts.

IMD also said that there might be moderate rain with thunder and lightning in some places in Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts, along with strong winds blowing at up to 40 kmph. They mentioned that rain is likely to fall in all parts of the state until May 12. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) added that there could be high waves of 0.5 to 1.6 meters and a sea storm along the Kerala coast until 11.30 tonight. The speed of these waves could vary between 15 cm and 50 cm per second due to a black sea phenomenon.

Fishermen and people living near the coast are advised to be careful. As the sea might get rough, it's best to stay away from dangerous areas as advised by the authorities. Also, make sure fishing vessels are securely tied up in the harbor. Keeping some distance between boats can help avoid accidents, and it's important to ensure that fishing equipment is safe.

Meanwhile, heavy rain on Wednesday evening caused problems for drivers navigating waterlogged roads in Bengaluru. The city experienced an average rainfall of 17.9mm, as per IMD.

According to the Bengaluru Traffic Police, traffic moved slowly between 5.30pm and 6.45pm on Jayamahal Road, Veeranna Palya to Hebbal Circle, Benniganahalli Railway Bridge, and other areas due to rain and waterlogging. Traffic police had to work hard to find solutions to keep traffic flowing smoothly.

IMD officials explained that there is a weather system stretching from east Vidarbha to north Tamil Nadu and from northeast Rajasthan to South Interior Karnataka. This weather pattern is causing rain in Coastal and South Interior Karnataka. They said that due to these conditions, there is a thunderstorm warning for seven days. Some places in Coastal and South Interior Karnataka are expected to receive moderate rainfall between May 8 and May 11. From May 12, moderate rainfall could be seen across Karnataka, according to the officials.
