The Delhi IGI Airport has become the first airport in India to implement an elevated cross taxiway system, marking a significant milestone in aviation infrastructure development in the country.

The only-of-its-kind taxiway has made the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) the first airport in India to have ECT. At Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, will unveil a 2.1 kilometre long, dual-lane Elevated Cross Taxiway on July 13, Thursday.
According to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the Eastern Cross Taxiway (ECT), will connect the northern & southern airfields on the east side of the airport, and will save passengers 7 to 20 minutes depending on factors like the directions of aircraft landing.
At Delhi Airport, the Eastern Cross Taxiways (ECT) are anticipated to cut the distance an aeroplane must travel from the third runway to Terminal 1 to about 2 kilometres, down from the current 9 km. The taxiways will also contribute to a 55,000-ton reduction in annual CO2 emissions.

In addition, the airport in the nation's capital will begin using its fourth runway on July 13 as well, according to a senior official who made the announcement on Friday.
Three runways are currently available at the national capital's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). With four runways, the Delhi Airport will have four, making it the only airport in India with this setup.
ECT will help to shorten the travel time for passengers before takeoff by reducing the distance between the two airfields by about twenty to seven minutes. However, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) noted that it also depends on variables including aircraft landing directions, etc.

After the implementation of ECT, airport authorities will be able to lower aircraft emissions, improve operational effectiveness, and save natural resources such as ATF according to DIAL officials.
