The Telangana Legislative Assembly has approved a proposal for the state government to take over Phase I of the Hyderabad Metro from Larsen & Toubro (L&T). This decision was made to speed up the expansion of the metro network and improve public transport in the city for the benefit of commuters.

Hyderabad Metro Phase I & its Operation
Phase I of the metro currently covers about 69 kilometres. The government now plans to expand the system further under Phase II. This expansion has two parts, Phase II(A), which will cover around 76.4 km, and Phase II(B), which will add about 86.1 km. Proposals for both phases have already been sent to the central government for approval.
At present, Phase I is operated privately by L&T. However, the government faced several technical, legal, and operational challenges in expanding the metro while it remained under private control. To solve these issues and meet the Centre's requirements for seamless integration between Phase I and Phase II, the state decided to take over the existing network.
Takeover of Hyderabad Metro
The takeover will be handled by Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), a government body responsible for metro operations. The Assembly fully supported this move, stating that it is in the public interest and will help improve connectivity across the growing urban areas of Hyderabad. The government also reviewed various challenges before this decision, including financial and operational concerns. However, authorities aim to ensure smoother planning and execution of future metro lines by taking control of Phase I.
Assembly's Urge to Central Government Regarding Phase II Approval
In addition, the Assembly urged the central government to quickly approve Phase II so that expansion work can begin without delays. Moreover, the decision reflects the state's effort to strengthen urban transport, meet rising public demand, and support the city's development.
