Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is planning a big expansion for the city's metro system. This project, called Phase-II Part A, will add five new metro corridors, stretching 76.4 km and including 54 stations. It will cost ₹24,269 crore and aims to improve city travel while connecting the existing metro routes with a special Airport Metro corridor.

A Joint Effort for Progress
This major project is being jointly funded by the Union and Telangana governments. The state government will contribute ₹7,313 crore, about 30% of the total cost, while the Union government will provide ₹4,230 crore, or 18%. This collaboration shows a strong commitment to making public transport better for Hyderabad's residents.
NVS Reddy, Managing Director of Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) and HMRL, shared that the project will be financed with loans from international lenders at low-interest rates of around 2%. These rates are much lower than the 9-10% offered by Indian banks. Additionally, the repayment period for these loans is 40 years, making it a cost-effective plan for the city.
Starting Work Soon
As part of the Phase-II plan, work on the Old City Metro will begin soon. Demolition in this area will start in December, and the main construction work will follow in January 2025. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is currently reviewing detailed project reports and plans to ensure everything is well-prepared before construction begins.
Cost-Effective Metro Expansion
The new metro expansion is not just large in scale but also very economical. Each kilometer of the new metro network will cost ₹318 crore, much less than similar projects in cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, and Mumbai, where costs range from ₹373 crore to ₹1,492 crore per kilometer. This cost-saving is possible because of innovative design and construction techniques.
The New Corridors
The Phase-II Part A expansion will cover important parts of Hyderabad with five new corridors:
1. Shamshabad-RGIA Airport Corridor
2. Raidurg-Kokapet Neopolis Corridor
3. MGBS-Chandrayangutta (Old City) Corridor
4. Miyapur-Patancheru Corridor
5. LB Nagar Corridor
These routes are planned to meet the growing needs of Hyderabad's commuters, making daily travel easier and faster.
A Better Future for Hyderabad
The Phase-II expansion is set to transform Hyderabad's public transport system. With better connectivity, a special Airport Metro corridor, and cost-efficient planning, this project is a big step toward making the city's transport modern and eco-friendly. It will support Hyderabad's growth and ensure smoother travel for everyone, marking a milestone in the city's development.
