Train services on the busy Howrah-Mumbai route have come to a complete stop due to continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days. The situation worsened on Wednesday evening, with all rail operations stopping from 7 pm. So far, 25 MEMU and passenger trains have been cancelled, and five long-distance trains have been diverted to other routes.

Red Alert in Western Jharkhand
The western region of Jharkhand is facing a red alert due to heavy rain. The affected districts include East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, Saraikela-Kharsawan, and Simdega. According to the Meteorological Department, these areas have received 348 mm of rainfall. The heavy downpour caused severe waterlogging on railway tracks, especially because of poor drainage systems in place.
Water levels on the tracks have risen to nearly two to three feet in some places, making it impossible for trains to pass safely. This has created serious challenges for railway officials trying to manage operations during the downpour.
Technical Problems Stop Trains
Because of the flooding, the electronic systems that help manage the movement of trains stopped working. Signals that were showing green suddenly turned red, halting all train traffic. These failures were caused by water entering the control systems on the tracks.
South Eastern Railway's General Manager, Anil Kumar Mishra, was supposed to visit Jharsuguda station but had to cancel the visit. He had to return to Tatanagar from Chakradharpur at around 10:30 am due to the flooded tracks.
Efforts to Resume Services
After returning, Mishra inspected the Tatanagar railway yard to assess the damage. He immediately instructed officials to build a large temporary drain. The goal is to remove the standing water quickly so that train services can be restarted as soon as possible.
Railway authorities are working round the clock to resolve the issues. However, due to the ongoing rain and high water levels, it may take some time before normal train operations resume.
Passengers are advised to check train schedules before making travel plans and stay updated with announcements from the railway department. The safety of passengers remains the top priority while efforts continue to bring services back to normal.
