3. Race Against Time: India acted swiftly upon intelligence reports suggesting Pakistan's plans to occupy the glacier under "Operation Ababeel." It was a race against time to prevent this.
4. Challenging Terrain: Indian troops maneuvered through icy passes, including the perilous Zoji La, to avoid detection. Nearly 300 soldiers were deployed on critical peaks and passes.

The extreme cold of Siachen can be brutal, with temperatures dropping to -40°C or lower, putting soldiers at risk of frostbite. At an altitude of around 20,000 feet, the thin air makes breathing difficult, adding to the physical strain on soldiers.
Frequent avalanches in the region pose a constant threat to the lives of soldiers, requiring constant vigilance and precautionary measures. Altitude sickness is a common occurrence among soldiers, with symptoms like headaches, nausea, and fatigue making their tasks even more arduous. The remote and isolated environment of Siachen limits access to essential supplies, medical aid, and communication, amplifying the challenges faced by soldiers.
The treacherous terrain, characterized by steep slopes and hidden crevasses, makes movement difficult and hazardous for soldiers. Carrying heavy gear and enduring prolonged periods of isolation take both a physical and mental toll on the soldiers stationed in Siachen.
The risk of accidental falls into hidden crevasses is ever-present, posing a serious danger to the lives of soldiers navigating the unforgiving terrain. Despite a ceasefire, occasional skirmishes with enemy forces add another layer of danger and uncertainty to the soldiers' already challenging mission.
Nevertheless, our soldiers at Siachen display unwavering dedication, holding their positions and safeguarding the glacier despite the adversities.
However, Siachen Glacier faces significant impacts from climate change:
- Melting Glaciers: Himalayan glaciers, including Siachen, have been consistently losing mass over the years.
- Ecological Consequences: Glacier retreat affects downstream ecosystems and water availability, impacting agriculture and local livelihoods.
- Risk of Catastrophic Events: Glacier melt contributes to the risk of floods, droughts, and food shortages in the region.
Protecting Siachen is not only crucial for India but also for neighboring Pakistan. Its stability and ecological health are vital for millions of people in the region.
