In a major step towards boosting tourism and connecting citizens with India's border regions, Himachal Pradesh has opened several remote areas, including parts of the Indo-China frontier in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti. These zones, once off-limits, can now be visited under a new regulated border tourism program. For the first time since India's independence, tourists can access the iconic Shipki La pass, known for its cultural importance, history, and breathtaking landscapes.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu launched this new initiative, called "Border Tourism," on June 9, 2025, during his visit to Kinnaur district. He became only the second leader of the state to visit Shipki La after Yashwant Singh Parmar. This project is not only about opening up the region to travelers but also about keeping the security and culture of the place intact. The CM also inaugurated the Sarhad Van Udyan project near the Indo-Tibet border, focusing on local ecological and tribal development.
Shipki La's Historical Role
Shipki La has been a vital trade route connecting Kinnaur to Tibet for hundreds of years. Goods like salt and wool once moved through this path until trade stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the route is being transformed into a tourist attraction. Nearby spots like the Gue Monastery, famous for its mummified monk, and the scenic Sangla Valley add more value to the travel experience.

New Rules for Visitors
Indian tourists and locals can visit Shipki La by showing a valid ID, such as an Aadhaar card. Although overnight stays are not allowed, travelers can enjoy treks to places like Indira Point near the Line of Control. They can also visit remote villages like Chitkul along the Indo-Tibet highway. Security is managed by the ITBP and Army, with daily permissions given to ensure safe travel.

Stronger Local Economy and Unity
This initiative helps local people by providing more job opportunities and supports eco-friendly tourism. It also strengthens India's presence in its border areas while letting travelers experience the beauty, history, and tribal culture of the Himalayas.
Now, Shipki La offers more than just scenic beauty-it brings people closer to India's spirit, culture, and its watchful frontiers.
