Torrential downpours led to extensive waterlogging, causing chaos on the city's streets. Underpasses turned into knee-deep water bodies, and the traffic came to a standstill as commuters waded through the flooded roads.

The heavy rains were attributed to changing monsoon patterns, likely influenced by climate change. Such erratic weather events have become more frequent, and the city was ill-prepared for the sudden deluge.
A City Once Graced by Lakes
Bengaluru was once celebrated as the "City of Lakes," a network of water bodies that played a crucial role in averting both floods and droughts. However, rapid urbanization led to encroachments on wetlands and floodplains, blocking natural floodways. The city's lakes faced unauthorized development, contributing to their deterioration and reducing their capacity to absorb excess rainwater.
Disrupting the Water Network
Urban sprawl severed the connections between Bengaluru's water bodies, rendering them isolated. The city's drainage systems, unable to cope with the sudden deluge, failed to divert water efficiently. Roads and drains, suffering from poor maintenance and damage, exacerbated the crisis, causing inundation in residential areas.
Widespread Waterlogging
Waterlogging was widespread across the city, affecting various neighborhoods, including Sarjapur Road, HSR Layout, Hulimavu, Bannerghatta Road, ITPL Road, Mahadevpura, Whitefield, Rajajinagar, Malleshwaram, JP Nagar, Old Madras Road, and Indiranagar. Construction of the metro, which is ongoing in several areas, added to the chaos.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister's Midnight Visit
In a surprising move, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar made a midnight visit to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) head office's war room at Hudson Circle to assess the situation.
Traffic Advisory and Commuter Woes
Bengaluru Traffic Police issued advisories, directing commuters to avoid certain waterlogged roads. Many residents took to social media to share videos of the submerged streets and continuous rainfall. While there was a brief respite in the evening, the rain resumed during the night, further exacerbating the situation. Notably, the Srirampur and Lingarjpura underpasses succumbed to the heavy downpour.
Weather Predictions
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted heavy rainfall for Coastal and South Interior Karnataka between November 6 and 8. The intensity of the northeast monsoon in southern India contributed to these weather patterns.
Traffic Woes and Slow Movements
Roads near Vidya Shilpa underpass service road and Kogilu junction witnessed slow-moving traffic due to waterlogging. At K.R. Puram Railway station, waterlogging created traffic snarls. Commuters were urged to adjust their travel schedules accordingly, particularly at Kasturinagar on ORR road, where waterlogging slowed vehicle movement.
