Mumbai has been experiencing heavy rains over the past two days, causing severe waterlogging in many areas. Daily commuters are facing significant travel disruptions due to these relentless monsoon showers.
Continuous Rains and Waterlogging
The city has been drenched by continuous rains, leading to chaos and inconvenience. Many parts of Mumbai are experiencing severe waterlogging, making it difficult for people to commute. Although local trains have managed to operate normally, many streets and neighborhoods are submerged in water, causing major disruptions. The situation is expected to worsen with a high tide of 3.66 meters anticipated at 11:18 PM.
Incidents and Cancellations
The heavy rains have also led to tragic incidents. In Nagpur district, two people lost their lives, and a 12-year-old boy went missing after being swept away in the floodwaters. The incessant rain has caused flight disruptions as well. Thirty-six flights were canceled at Mumbai airport due to the intermittent heavy rain. Additionally, the Andheri Subway had to be shut down for traffic because of waterlogging, adding to the woes of commuters.
Rainfall Data
Mumbai has received substantial rainfall, exacerbating the waterlogging situation. From 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, the city recorded 100 mm of rain. The eastern suburbs received 118 mm, and the western suburbs recorded 110 mm of rainfall during the same period. This heavy downpour has overwhelmed the city's drainage systems, leading to flooding in many areas.
IMD Alerts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several areas in Mumbai, including Borivali, Santacruz, Powai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Chembur. This alert indicates that moderate to intense rainfall is expected in these regions. Residents are advised to stay cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during this period.
