Heavy Rainfall Alert Issued for Chennai, Tamil Nadu: Cyclonic Circulation to Intensify Showers

Tamil Nadu is gearing up for heavy rainfall as the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecasted significant downpours across the state from January 12 to January 15. The expected weather change is due to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, which is set to intensify rainfall beyond the usual levels seen during this time.

Heavy Rainfall Alert for Tamil Nadu

Cyclonic Disturbance to Boost Rainfall

The cyclonic circulation is currently located over the southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, extending up to 3.1 km above sea level. This system is likely to enhance the northeast monsoon's strength, which is expected to retreat around January 15. Districts including Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Ranipet, Vellore, and Tiruvannamalai are predicted to experience heavy rainfall in the coming days.

Weather Alerts and Forecast

A yellow alert has been issued for Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanniyakumari, where intense rainfall is expected on January 14 and 15. Light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are also anticipated across both northern and southern Tamil Nadu. Weather models indicate above-average rainfall until January 16, after which conditions are expected to normalize between January 17 and January 23.

In Chennai and surrounding areas, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is likely in the next couple of days. Morning mist or haze may occur, with temperatures ranging from 22°C to 30°C for the minimum and maximum, respectively.

Advisory for Fishermen

Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea for the next two days due to rough weather conditions. Winds are forecasted to blow at speeds of 35-45 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 55 km/h, especially near the southern Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Comorin area. Those already at sea are urged to return to shore for safety.

As Tamil Nadu prepares for heavy rainfall and its potential impact, both residents and authorities are on high alert. The state is taking steps to minimize disruptions and ensure safety during this weather event, expected to persist until mid-January.

With the combined challenges of heavy rains, thunderstorms, and strong winds, the state's residents are advised to stay informed, follow safety guidelines, and take necessary precautions to navigate through the upcoming weather conditions.
