The tender process for Phase 2 of the Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) project has been delayed due to the pending finalisation of the Cyber City station layout by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), officials informed the Haryana government last week. During a board meeting held on October

13, GMRL officials mentioned another major reason for the delay: the lack of funding approval from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The second phase of the Gurugram Metro project will cover a 16-kilometre stretch, connecting Sector-9 metro station to Cyber City.
Phase 1 Work of the Project
Meanwhile, work on Phase 1 of the project, from Millennium City Centre to Sector-9, has already begun. A ₹1,286-crore contract was awarded earlier this year, and construction officially started on September 3. The contractor has set up a casting yard to make concrete slabs and other structures needed for the viaduct. At the October meeting, GMRL officials discussed a backup plan in case EIB funding is further delayed. They decided that the World Bank, which has already done groundwork, including internal approvals, due diligence, and stakeholder consultations, could take over the portion originally meant to be financed by EIB.
Ease Of Traffic Congestion
In June, the Haryana government formed a committee to determine the exact location of the metro station at Shankar Chowk, working with NCRTC. According to an official, the state authorities prefer relocating the RRTS station slightly towards Delhi, near Ambience Mall. This shift aims to ease traffic congestion around Shankar Chowk, one of Gurugram's busiest intersections. Overall, while Phase-1 is progressing smoothly, Phase-2 faces hurdles connected to station design and funding approvals, which must be resolved before construction can begin.
