Gurugram Metro Phase II: GMRL has Submitted a Revised Tender Proposal to the World Bank

According to officials, the new tender covers the construction of metro stations, railway tracks, and some double-decker sections. However, it does not include electrical traction systems or design work. These parts have been removed because the World Bank is not funding the entire project cost.

A senior GMRL official said the revised tender is worth around ₹1,409 crore and has been sent to the World Bank for approval. The total cost of the remaining work is about ₹2,700 crore. To cover the funding gap of nearly ₹1,600 crore, GMRL is seeking financial support from Germany's state-owned KfW Development Bank. The bank recently carried out a project appraisal, and officials are hopeful that the approval process will move forward quickly.

Gurugram Metro Phase 2 Corridor

The 13-km Phase 2 metro corridor will have 14 stations, including Sector 7, Sector 4, Sector 5, Ashok Vihar, Sector 3, Bajghera Road, Palam Vihar Extension, Palam Vihar, Sector 23A, Sector 22, Udyog Vihar Phase 4, Udyog Vihar Phase 5, Cyber City, and a spur line to Gurugram Railway Station.

Officials said the Union government's economic ministry suggested approaching KfW Development Bank because World Bank approvals usually take more time. KfW has shown a strong interest in financing the project.

Last week, a four-member delegation from KfW visited the proposed metro route. The team inspected the alignment, station locations, expected passenger demand, travel patterns, and interchange facilities. According to GMRL, the discussions were positive, and both sides finalised and signed the meeting minutes, which included important decisions and future action plans. The visit is expected to help speed up the appraisal and funding process for the Gurugram Metro Phase 2 project.

How will this Metro Line Improve Connectivity?

The new metro line will also improve connectivity by providing interchanges with the existing Rapid Metro, the Delhi Metro Yellow Line, and the upcoming Namo Bharat Rail corridor. This is expected to make travel easier for daily commuters across Gurugram and nearby areas.
