Gujarat is in for an exciting upgrade as plans for three new airports, including one near the renowned Statue of Unity (SoU) in Kevadia, were revealed. The State Assembly shared this development in response to MLA Shailesh Mehta's inquiry about the Prime Minister's 2018 announcement regarding airport development.
Mehta's query confirmed the construction of an airport just 12 kilometres from Kevadia, in line with the Statue of Unity's remarkable popularity, attracting over 1 crore tourists since its inauguration.
Beyond Kevadia, airports are also on the horizon for Ferkuwa and Surova in Tilakwada, along with Siddhapur and Vadnagar. Pre-feasibility studies are already underway in these locations, setting the stage for enhanced connectivity and expanded tourism opportunities.
The decision to establish airports in these areas is directly tied to the success of the Statue of Unity, according to a tourism department official. The official highlighted that Siddhapur and Vadnagar are experiencing a surge in tourist arrivals, and improved air connectivity will undoubtedly boost tourism in all three locations. The significant rise in tourism is evident in the record-breaking 50 lakh visitors to the SoU in 2023. To meet the increasing demand, the government has consistently expanded facilities, introduced new attractions, and upgraded passenger amenities, including transportation. The recent addition of 30 electric buses aligns with the vision of creating a sustainable "dream area." Recognizing the paramount importance of transportation for travelers, the Prime Minister has directed the development of the SoU as an EV zone, enhancing its overall appeal.
The influx of tourists has led to over 4 lakh registrations since December 2023. The reasons for this surge are diverse, ranging from a wider range of attractions for all ages to improved transport facilities and unique experiences like traditional tribal home stays. The clean and tidy campus, along with a focus on local employment opportunities, further contributes to the positive tourism experience.
As Gujarat takes to the skies with these upcoming airports, the state is not only enhancing its connectivity but also embracing the tourism boom fueled by iconic attractions like the Statue of Unity. The announcement signals a promising future for Gujarat's tourism sector, inviting travelers to explore the vibrant landscapes and cultural treasures the state has to offer.
