For many years, the Sabarmati Riverfront project in Ahmedabad has been turning into a beautiful place loved by the people in the city and those who visit. They first thought about it in the 1960s, and they started building it in 2005. Since 2012, they've been letting the public enjoy the different parts as they finish building them. In 2020, they approved Phase 2, making the Sabarmati Riverfront a symbol of making the environment better, helping people socially, and improving the economy.
A Lush Oasis Along Sabarmati's Banks
Situated along the banks of the Sabarmati River, this waterfront development project in Ahmedabad is nothing short of spectacular. Though conceptualized in the 1960s, the Sabarmati Riverfront project sprang to life in 2005. Under Phase 1, sections of the waterfront were progressively opened to the public as various facilities took shape. Phase 2 got the green light in 2020, ensuring the project's continuous evolution. The Sabarmati River, a monsoon-fed watercourse, flows through a catchment area spanning 21,674 square kilometers. Controlled by the Dharoi Dam and Vasna Barrage, the river's water level is meticulously managed. Contributing to its abundance is the Narmada Canal, adding an extra layer of richness to the Sabarmati's flow.
A Public Space Extravaganza
The Sabarmati Riverfront is more than just a project; it's a vast public space offering an array of recreational facilities. From sprawling parks and gardens to event venues, promenades, ghats, markets, food zones, and children's play areas - the riverfront is a hub of activities. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foresight, the Sabarmati Riverfront has become an iconic project on Gujarat's urban landscape. With Phase 1 completed, Phase 2 underway, and plans for Phase 3 shaping up, the riverfront is on track to extend its length from Subhash Bridge to Indira Bridge. Upon completion, it will span 38.2 kilometers, making it one of the longest and most scenic riverfronts globally.
Beyond Ahmedabad: Gandhinagar's Turn
Taking a cue from the success in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat government envisions extending the Sabarmati Riverfront to Gandhinagar. The proposed Phase 4 and Phase 5 will stretch from Indira Bridge in Ahmedabad to Gandhinagar, promising an eco-friendly recreational space. The expansion plans highlight the government's commitment to sustainable development and public welfare.
Coinciding with the national interim budget, Gujarat's state budget for 2024-25 mirrors the focus on poverty alleviation, women's empowerment, agricultural development, and youth welfare. This synchronicity reflects a holistic approach to societal well-being, aligning with both national and state-level priorities.
