The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is introducing an exciting new way for tourists to explore Kochi. An open-top double-decker bus, known for its unique design, is set to offer "City Tour" rides, giving passengers a chance to enjoy the city's sights in a completely different way.
The Iconic Bus Returns
The bus, previously used for the "Heritage Tour" in Thalassery, has now arrived in Kochi. KSRTC has already started route trials to find the best paths for the service. One of the suggested routes is from Madhava Pharmacy to Fort Kochi via MG Road. However, there are some challenges, such as narrow roads and the height of trees and nearby structures.
Features of the Bus
The double-decker bus can carry up to 70 passengers and has been slightly refurbished for a better touring experience. The seats are specially arranged to provide clear views of the city, especially during the evening and nighttime. Passengers can also enjoy a high-quality audio system that adds to the overall experience.
This bus, a relic of the past with its double-clutch mechanism, has been maintained and upgraded at the Ernakulam main depot to ensure a smooth ride for all travelers.
Evening Tours for Better Views
KSRTC plans to start the "City Tour" services after 6 PM. This timing will allow passengers to experience Kochi's charm under the stars with reduced traffic. The authorities believe this will attract both tourists and locals looking for a unique way to explore the city.
Overcoming Challenges
Navigating through Kochi's narrow roads and dealing with the height of structures and tree branches are the main obstacles. To address these issues, KSRTC is working with the Kochi Corporation to trim tree branches and ensure the bus can travel smoothly along the planned routes.
Fares and Anticipated Demand
The fare for the upper deck is expected to be around ₹200 per seat, while the lower deck may cost ₹100 per seat. KSRTC is gearing up for high demand during the festive season, especially Christmas and New Year. If this initiative proves successful, another bus may join the service.
